It is frequently said that "people eat with their eyes first"' This was definitely my strategy at the Wine Rendezvous Grand Tasting and Chef Tasting this past weekend at the Woodlands Waterway Marriott. With 75 restaurants and over 225 wineries in the house, there was no way to sample it all.
As a diabetic, after a glass of bubbly at the event opening and 4 or 5 sip of various wines, I was ready to move on to the food. This was my plan going in to help manage my blood sugar. But, I didn't feel cheated at all.
I am a seafood lover so I sampled almost all of the seafood dishes. From truffled halibut to shrimp and crawfish dumplings topped with caviar; there was something for all tastes. Everything was fresh and inviting. MasterChef winner Shaun O'Neale served crab that had been freshly flown in from Oregon. Add the wide array of ceviches and tuna tartares to round out the category.
Every protein you could imagine was on display. One of my favorite bites was the duck confit with wild rice, beautiful mushrooms, and truffles from Fadi's. How can one go wrong with that combination? You knew you were in for a treat before you sampled the dish. Their display featured all of the raw mushrooms and BEAUTIFUL black truffles on a bed of rice.
Desserts were not an afterthought by any means. Chef Ryan Witcher from Robard's Steakhouse deserved the win for his magical concoction - Texas Two Step Donut Sundae. Featuring vanilla bean brioche donuts, Basil infused Texas peaches, Rebecca Creek Whiskey Toffee Sauce, butter Texas pecans, homemade peach jam, and vanilla bean ice cream.
Latin Bites' presented their tropical dessert in mini terra cotta pots which was so whimsical that it caught my eye. Add in the meyer lemon semi-freddo from CRU and this girl was done for the night!!! But, I do plan on working my way through these restaurants and vineyards through the summer. Stay tuned....
